National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fights for More than Fire Prevention

Did you know that one of the oldest organizations that advocates for life safety also creates the National Electrical Code?

A lot of people don’t know the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is the developer of the National Electrical Code. All electricians and electrical contractors use the electrical code to design systems, develop products, and to install wiring in all types of buildings.

This code is adopted throughout all 50 states and is used for code regulations for running wiring and electrical safety throughout the United States.

“Even though our name is the National Fire Protection Association, we’re more interested not just in fire safety, but also life safety and electrical hazards,” NFPA Segment Director Diana Jones said. “Part of our mission is fire safety but we’re also focused on eliminating electrical hazards and other safety hazards.”

Founded in 1896, NFPA is a global, nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards. The association delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy; and by partnering with others who share an interest in furthering the NFPA mission. “Part of our mission is to utilize these documents and some of our other tools is to work towards elimination of fire loss, whether that’s’ death, injury or property loss,” NFPA division manager Robert Solomon said. “Among our other activities, we also have codes for building construction, building exits, fire alarm systems and security systems.”
